How to enable Install unknown apps on Android
Enable Install unknown apps for the browser or file manager that opens your APK. Covers Android 7.0 through 14 with screenshots-by-description.
Android blocks APK installs by default. The toggle that allows them lives in a different place on each Android version.
On Android 7.0 to 9: open Settings > Security > Install unknown apps, pick the source (browser or file manager) and toggle Allow from this source on.
On Android 10 to 11: open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. The list shows each app that can request the permission. Toggle it on for the source you used.
On Android 12 to 14: same path as 10 to 11, but the toggle name reads Install unknown apps. The app you grant the permission to can install APKs from the version it advertises.
After installing the APK, you can turn the toggle back off. The install permission is per-app and per-install; turning it off does not uninstall the app.
